Statement of Evolution
In 1923, Dr. Samuel Brooks, then as president of Baylor University, affirmed that teaching of evolution at Baylor was consistent with the mission of the university stating that, "The Bible and science are not out of harmony with each other…...when the heart is responsive to God, the mind is usually without prejudice to investigate all facts in search of the truth."
Evolution is a foundational principle of science and the cornerstone of modern biology that is supported by extensive research evidence. The Department of Biology at Baylor University teaches evolution throughout our curriculum, as it has done for many decades. Concerns about integration of science and faith are not new issues in society or at Baylor University. As Biology faculty and persons of Christian or Jewish faith, we are sometimes asked how we reconcile our faith and our careers in science. Each of us has walked our own path, often informed by a large and thoughtful body of literature from scientists and philosophers alike that demonstrates, convincingly, that faith and science do not conflict, but rather strengthen each other. For this reason, we offer the following list of references as a starting point for others to learn about the many ways scientists live both a personal life of faith and a professional life in science.
